Mobile Internet Access while Traveling in Thailand

During my short trip to Southern Thailand in October 2009, I have found that the mobile internet access by DTAC had helped me a lot. I can stay online, chat with my buddies via Yahoo Messenger, updating status on facebook, tweeting on my my twitter account, and even navigating with Google Earth and booking a hostel with a lastminute deal.

Thai Happy Prepaid Simcard
Thai Happy Prepaid GSM Simcard (by DTAC) is widely available through the 7-11 stores. I bouht one for 49 bath. and it is activated with a preset price plan. It can be used for domestic and international Call/SMS from Thailand.

EDGE Refill Card
With specific happy internet voucher (EDGE Refill Card), the happy prepaid simcard can be registered for mobile internet access package. Happy EDGE Refill Card is different from the regular balance refill card. It costs about 50 bath for 300 minutes internet access at EDGE speed (theoretically, maximum download speed with EDGE connection is 236.8 kbps).

For me, the connection speed is fairly good, and the price is very cheap. The GSM/EDGE coverage is also good so that I can connect while relaxing in the comfort of my hotel room or from a remote islands in the andaman sea.

The only thing I would like to note about the happy internet service is that while the internet service activation is easy and fast, re-activating the service sometime takes hours. So if you want to continue using the same simcard please remember to top up your EDGE GPRS minutes before it runs out to avoid service re-activation.
